Why more ATK doesn't always mean more damage

The short answer

It's because the damage formula gives every Aniimo that isn't a DPS (damage dealer) a minimum ATK. When it works out damage, the game lifts a low ATK up to that minimum. The minimum comes from the Aniimo's level, or from its BREAK stat if it's a Breaker. So while its own ATK is below the minimum, raising ATK changes nothing. The developers explained this on 13 October. They plan to rework it in version 1.1, so ATK counts more directly.

What the game does

Every Aniimo can deal damage, even one built to heal or support. The game wants a low-ATK Aniimo to still get through an enemy's defences. So the damage formula gives every Aniimo outside the DPS role a guaranteed minimum ATK.

For most of them, the minimum is based on level. For Breakers, it's based on their BREAK stat instead. When the game works out a hit, it uses the minimum if the Aniimo's own ATK is lower.

So if a support's ATK is under its minimum, an ATK upgrade raises a number the game isn't using. The damage stays exactly the same.

Who it affects

  • Every Aniimo whose role isn't DPS. That means Breakers, healers, supports and the rest.
  • But only while their own ATK is below the minimum. Once their ATK passes it, ATK counts as normal.
  • DPS Aniimo don't get a minimum ATK. So for them, ATK works the way you'd expect.

What to do until version 1.1

  1. If an ATK upgrade didn't change a non-DPS Aniimo's damage, its ATK is under the minimum. So stop spending ATK on it.
  2. For a Breaker, raise BREAK instead. Its minimum ATK follows BREAK, so BREAK is what raises its damage.
  3. For other non-DPS Aniimo, level them up. Levelling up raises their minimum, and that raises their damage.
  4. Put your ATK materials into your DPS Aniimo instead, because every point counts there.

What changes in version 1.1

Good news: the developers plan to update the damage formula in version 1.1. Then raising ATK will have a more direct effect on damage for these Aniimo. They want to keep combat mostly the same. They say the details will come in an official announcement before the update.

ATK and damage, answered

Why doesn't my Aniimo's damage go up when I raise its ATK?

If it isn't a DPS, its ATK is probably below the minimum the game gives it. The game uses that minimum instead of its own ATK. So raising ATK changes nothing until its ATK passes the minimum.

Which Aniimo have a minimum ATK in Aniimo?

Every Aniimo outside the DPS role has one. That includes Breakers, healers, supports and the rest.

What is the minimum ATK based on?

It's based on the Aniimo's level. For a Breaker, it's based on its BREAK stat instead.

How do you raise a Breaker's damage in Aniimo?

Raise its BREAK stat. A Breaker's minimum ATK follows BREAK, so while its own ATK is low, BREAK is what raises its damage.

Should I raise ATK on a healer or support?

Not while its ATK is under the minimum, because it won't change the damage. Level it up instead, because that raises the minimum. Spend your ATK materials on your DPS Aniimo.

Does the minimum ATK apply to DPS Aniimo?

No, it only covers Aniimo outside the DPS role. So a DPS gets the full value of every ATK point.

Is Aniimo changing how ATK works?

Yes. The developers plan to update the damage formula in version 1.1, so ATK increases count more directly. The details will come in an announcement before the update.
